Ethercrown

During the Long Burning, dragons razed everything humankind ever tried to build, and the people lived hidden under stone. Then a wandwright named Vesper discovered a vein of Ethercrystal, which emanates a rare violet light, no more than a single small cluster existing in all the world, that no dragon could bear to go near. It was smuggled to his workshop at the cost of many lives, where Vesper split the precious vein into shards and crowned each on a length of unburnable bonewood, and forged a finite number of wands called the Ethercrowns. Behind their light the realm finally built walls, then towers, then weapons, and the dragons withdrew until they faded into legend.. But as the danger was forgotten, so was the wands' purpose, and so of the few Ethercrowns that still exist today, scattered and dim, waiting for the day the dragons return and someone remembers what they were made to do.
